Recent Trends of International Migration from India

Abstract

International migration has been an important issue for both the origin and destination places as it has a great impact on the society and economy of the area. India, as a developing nation has been experiencing lots of emigration incidence into different developed nations in the last few decades. India is presently ranked 1st in the source country of international migration. Nearly 18 million Indians presently reside in various countries of the globe. Most of the migration happened from India towards the high-income group countries, indicating the financial interest of emigration. Destination wise USA, UK and the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries are the most distinguished destination for Indian migrants. The study is basically a secondary data based activity and data are collected from the various national and international agencies. The study found that there have been spatial variations in international migration from India. The study also found that GCC countries are significant in terms of the destination of Indian migrants. The study also revealed that international migration from India is mostly a male-dominated phenomenon and young adults are mostly involved in migration from India. Remittances received by India are the world-highest and it is continuously increasing. South Indian states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka dominated the emigration from India. In the last couple of decades UP, Bihar, Rajasthan and West Bengal have emerged as the major source states of International migrants from India.
