Abstract

Abstract:

“The literature of realism, aiming at the truthful reflection of reality, must demonstrate both the concrete and abstract potentialities of human beings in extreme situations.”-(Lukas 23)

Novel is the depiction of the social and political facts- the realities of times. Writers captures the strength as well as weaknesses of the epoch’s great events. The portrayal of reality involves highlighting the important problems of the people and new aspect of life. It is an act which serves as a bridge, linking the writer with the society not only at a given time but across time and social divisions.  It is true that: “contemporary novels are the mirror of the age, a mirror that reflects not merely the external features of the age but also its inner face, its nervous system, coursing of its blood and the unconscious promptings and conflicts which sway it” Social realist artists attempt to show human beings and their lives in a practical way.  Social realism a painting does no longer belong to one length of history alternatively has been the trend of some artists in distinct centuries and distinctive countries. Amitav Ghosh and Vikram Seth give great prominence to social and cultural incidents in his writings for bringing about a significant impact among the masses of this world. In the novel shadow line Amitav Ghosh rebuild the world without war and as a blossoming garden with full of aromatic smell. The circle of reason by Ghosh is the novel which brought one such a change. Vikram Seth’s novels A suitable boy, The Golden Gate depict a post-independence Indian life. Hence, he has been viewed one of the outstanding figures in the history of Indian English Literature.
